<P>Building on the Altus Academy Experience This issue of Northern Now includes the inspirational story of Altus Academy and the NIU alumni who have been a driving force behind its success. The success of Altus Academy should be heartening to us all. It demonstrates that people with talent, dedication, and a vision as to what a quality educational experience should be can make a real difference in the lives of disadvantaged students. I am proud of the role that NIU has played in helping a dedicated group of alumni achieve their vision of creating an innovative curriculum for middle school kids, underpinned by an emphasis on building personal character and inculcating strong values. I am also pleased that Altus will soon become one of the hundreds of schools across the region where NIU education majors complete their student teaching. We hope these amazing opportunities for students from across the university to mentor and inspire will remain a part of the Altus mission for years to come. Our work with Altus on a small scale is something we need to replicate across our region and state, as what is happening at Altus builds the skills and dispositions for students to be prepared to succeed at the college level. NIU is a thoroughly engaged participant in this effort. Our most profound and potentially far-reaching initiative has been the establishment of our Regional P-20 Network, an ambitious undertaking involving partners in our region from across the preschool, K-12, and work continuum, including state agencies, community colleges, and school districts, as well as other post-secondary partners. This initiative, which has been recognized by the White House, has taken as its goal to boost the number of college-educated and certi?ed adults in Illinois by 30,000 in the next decade. When discussing the role of higher education in Illinois, alumni can con?dently tell their friends and neighbors that NIUs in?uence is felt well beyond what happens on our campuses. We are actively helping our network partners make the connections all the way along the education continuum that will help students all over the state perform better and go farther in life. Altus Academy is a living case study that shows how NIU can mobilize its educational resources to make a difference at the middle school level. We encourage you to follow the work our P-20 Network is doing to make a difference in all those lives we may never directly touch. It is important work, and you can take pride in your alma mater for leading the way. Together Forward, Doug presidentsmessage NIU President Douglas D.
