<P>22northern now winter 2016 huskie sports NIU Athletics held the inaugural Victor E. Ball – a premier fundraising event bene?ting Huskie student-athletes – on November 7 at the Pavilion at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove. More than 200 guests joined NIU President Doug Baker, Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics Sean T. Frazier, the Huskie head coaches, and student- athletes representing every NIU sports program at the gala, which was the ?rst of its kind for NIU Athletics. During the cocktail hour, guests mingled while placing bids on the more than eighty silent auction items available via mobile bidding. Emcee David Kaplan of Comcast SportsNet Chicago and ESPN1000 then welcomed all into the seating area of the spectacular car museum, which donor Jerry Rich, 61, and his son, Keith, opened to NIU for this special event. A fantastic meal, presented by Acquaviva Winery in Maple Park, set the stage for a powerful program that began with featured speaker Tom Izzo, head basketball coach of the Michigan State Spartans and one of the most accomplished coaches in intercollegiate athletics. Through video and in-person presentations, guests then had the opportunity to meet several of the NIU student-athletes who bene?t directly from their support. Footballs William Lee, Andrew Glaeser of mens soccer, and Latesha Bigby of womens track and ?eld told their individual stories, illustrating the impact NIU and intercollegiate athletics have had on their lives. Former Huskie quarterback Chandler Harnish worked the room as celebrity auctioneer during the energetic live auction portion of the evening. Popular auction items included trips with the Huskie football and mens basketball teams and private football camps for ten conducted by Harnish himself. While the monies raised at the ball to support Huskie student-athletes will have a great impact, Frazier said seeing the passion, energy, and teamwork surrounding the entire event will stay with him forever. It was a special night in so many ways, Frazier says. The generosity of the guests and donors, the stories of our student-athletes, and the speech by Coach Izzo were so impactful. Even more than that, I saw passion, dedication, and teamwork, and Im energized. We have a tremendous group of people – from staff to coaches to student-athletes to administration to donors – who truly care about and are working to move not just Huskie Athletics but our entire university forward. Gala Event Supports NIU Student-Athletes NIU Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics Sean T. Frazier closed out the evening with a ?nal thank you to all in attendance.
