<P>18 JUNE 2016 RANCH HORSE JOURNAL BLACK HOPE STIK Versatility Ranch Horse Amateur World Champion ITS NOT TOO OFTEN THAT YOU RUN ACROSS A WORLD champion whose bloodline has been cultivated by one family for, literally, the better part of a century. But Black Hope Stik is that horse. The 2005 mare was bred by AQHA Professional Horseman Mike Major and ridden to her second world championship by Mikes wife, Holly, to win the amateur Versatility Ranch Horse world championship. The mare won the open VRH world championship in 2012 with Mike, making her the only horse to win VRH world titles in two different divisions. The Majors are from Bowie, Texas, and bred Black Hope Stik from their stallion and two-time Versatility Ranch Horse world champion Smart Whiskey Doc and the Rails Skipper Pine mare Hope Stik. Black Hope Stiks bottom side has been maintained by the Major family since 1949, when they acquired Harmons Darlingcory, Black Hope Stiks seventh dam. They bred and maintained this family, and when Mike left home, he took with him two full sisters, one of whom was Cory Charger, Black Hope Stiks fourth dam. Like father, like daughter – Smart Whiskey Doc and Black Hope Stik are the only sire/offspring pair to both have earned VRH world championships. Smart Whiskey Doc earned more than $19,000 while competing in AQHA, NRCHA, RHAA and SHOT. He has sired 15 performers that have combined earnings of more than $43,000. Black Hope Stik is by far his top earner to date, with more than $35,700 accumulated since 2009. He is a son of Paddys Irish Whiskey out of the Smart Little Aleck mare Smart Little Carol. But the two have different personalities, too. She is pretty high strung and watchful, Mike says of ‘Black Hope. ‘Whiskey is really quiet, and kind of an amazing horse himself. Everything you need for the cow horse and cutting is right below the surface. If you need it, its right there quick, but when you dont need it, like for the trail or ranch riding, you just have to push him through those classes. Whereas Black Hopes energy stays just a little above the bottom. Shes got a bit more go in her, and she watches more things. Her dam, Hope Stik, is an 18-year-old gray out of the Bright Mito Bars mare Averys Blue Roan. BLACK HOPE STIK 2005 black mare Exhibitor: Holly Major of Bowie, Texas Owner/Breeder: AQHA Professional Horseman Mike Major of Bowie, Texas AQHA World Show Earnings: $7,206 SHOT Earnings: $1,548 Total Earnings: $35,720 AQHA Points: 87 AQHA VRH open world champion: 2012 AQHA VRH open reserve world champion: 2011 PADDYS IRISH WHISKEY SMART WHISKEY DOC SMART LITTLE CAROL BLACK HOPE STIK RAILS SKIPPER PINE HOPE STIK AVERYS BLUE ROAN I like all the colts we get out of that old mare, Mike says of Hope Stik. Shes kind of a waspy old mare, but as we started riding her colts, they really shined. Black Hope is also her dams leading earner by far. However, Hope Stik has produced several other competitors, including the young colt Chics Hope Stik by Hollys other successful ride, Chica Shine, on whom she won the 2011 VRH amateur world championship. Whats amazing to me is that Ive bought a lot of mares between this time and that time, mares that were really blue-type bloodlines, Mike says. And the colts that I felt like were the best were out of that old bloodline that weve had forever. And what makes these horses so good? The grit, he says. The horses have so much grit, so much try. It doesnt matter how hard you ride them, or what you do. They just never, ever say no to you. And Black Hope is a hard-trying mare. In addition to her multiple world championships, in 2010 she earned her single biggest paycheck by helping Mike to victory in Project Cowboy, a varied competition that included testing of horsemanship, livestock handling and ability in front of a camera. The victory was worth $10,000 in cash, as well as other prizes. In their demo, Mike rode the mare bridleless, demonstrating cow work, flying lead changes and sliding stops. We bred her and raised her and shes a great mare, Holly says. Shes strong in the cattle classes. The Majors believe it might be time to retire Black Hope and work on raising the next generation. It is neat, especially for as long as Ive been breeding horses, to still go back to some of the original horses we started with, Mike says.
