<P>26 JUNE 2016 RANCH HORSE JOURNAL Trainer Tyler Wiese guided them through the process, helping them prepare in the few short weeks they had, and then going with them to help at the show. It was really intimidating, but I think only because I made it that way, Laura says. Its the first time weve been to a big horse show. We basically went from the wading pool to the deep end with nothing in between. But swim they did. The two amateurs showed together on the mares they have raised up and trained, and both finished with top-10 placings. Robert was eighth, and Laura was ninth in the limited amateur division. Versatility Ranch Horse is what we really like to do for a variety of reasons, Robert says. First, the people who do it are just the nicest people in the world. Were just a couple of old farts from a small town, and we ended up going to an AQHA World Championship show! And people treated us so well. It was just an experience of a lifetime for both of us. Now were trying to figure out how we can qualify to come back again. But even at the biggest show of their lives, they kept track of one of their key tenets, enjoying and sharing their love of hors- es. Laura gave a pony ride to a little girl while her dad got a photo. They were just thrilled to death! she says. And you never know with a child, that may set her on that ‘I want a horse path. And Robert, too, had perspective. He had a real- ly disappointing cutting run, he says, despite the help of AQHA Professional Horsemen Mike Major and Mozaun McKibben as his turnback help (Thats like playing touch football with Tom Brady and Bret Farve!), but he wasnt discouraged. Its not about the competing, he observes. Its about the experience, and my horse. While we were warming up, there were families that were at the rail, and I tried to make a point whenever I saw a family to move my horse over and let the young kids pat the horses. Im an ambassador for my horse, Im an ambassador for my lifestyle, Im an ambassador for competing, and Im also an ambassador for AQHA. And that meant a lot to me. Some people do this because they love to compete, Robert continues. Some because they get a passion for horses, like Laura when she was very young. For me, its just something that happened. And it led to me being mar- ried to Laura. Laura and I have a very deep love for each other, but its also something glued together by the fabric of our horses. Andrea Caudill is editor of the Ranch Horse Journal. To comment, write to acaudill@aqha.org. They went to the 2007 Fort Ranch Production Sale in Promontory, Utah. There, they each selected a weanling filly – and promptly dubbed them Thelma and Louise. Lauras filly, A Holey Doc Prom, is a buckskin daughter of Little Pistol Badge out of the Doc A Holey mare A Holy Doc Lady. Laura says she picked Louise for her cutting bloodlines, as well as for her good mind. The mare traces to American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame members Freckles Playboy, Peppy San Badger and Doc Bar. I thought, ‘she might work, and she has, Laura says. But these are not easy horses. Her forte seems to be cutting, and shes become a nice horse. When she gets in the cutting pen, she works hard and shes pretty gritty. Robert, however, picked his horse, Bobs Pistol Prom, solely from her picture in the catalog. I saw the picture of Thelma and thought, ‘I really like the way that horse is looking at the camera, he says dryly. It was a really informed decision. The mare is by Bobalena Bob, a son of Bob Acre Doc, and out of the Little Pistol Badge mare Holly Pistol Prom. They loaded both babies into the trailer – the fillies were not so much as halter broken – and took them home. The Muccis have trained the horses them- selves, from the very start. Theyve really taught us a lot, Robert says. Theyve not been easy horses to train, but theyve been really good, honest horses. They demand a lot from us and when we dont produce, they look at us like ‘what are you guys doing up there? One of the big benefits to where the Muccis live now, they agree, is the ability to walk out their front gate and ride for hours. Its something they take advantage of, riding nearly every day. We go out riding, some days for like five hours, side by side, and dont say a single thing, but at the same time be communicating every second, Laura says. They also have a riding area on their property, a flag to work, take regular lessons and also help with friends brand- ings, but do a lot of trail riding. I think its good for the horses minds, Laura says. And its so convenient for us. We can get a lot of training done on a trail ride, moving their hindquarters, or moving their ribs, collecting them, stuff like that. They learned in January that they had qualified to the Zoetis AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championships, held in Houston in March. At first, they thought it was a mistake, even calling the AQHA office to verify it. Then Laura said, ‘Do you think we should go? Robert says. And I said, ‘Are you out of your mind? Of course were going to go! We may never get to have this experience again.
