30 JUNE 2016 RANCH HORSE JOURNAL When a person whos showing takes a big chance, its a higher degree of difficulty. That horse gave her no problem, he just went right into it. And quickly. It wasnt a long drawn out process and there wasnt a lot of urging with her feet. This horse did what his rider told him. Again, smoothness is important. If its hard to ride (the score) goes down. Just like any other class, a horse thats a great mover is a great scorer. Movement plays just as big of part in ranch riding as it does any other class. So you cant just say, I am going to take a reining horse and show it in ranch riding, because its going to spin fast. You cant take a trail horse and say I am going to show it in ranch riding because its not afraid of the obstacles. A ranch horse has its own ele- ments and its own job to do. Posting doesnt raise or lower a degree of difficulty. Its all about their movement. Alex: Through the serpentine on the extended trot, the horse had good expression. He maintains a good pace, and was guiding well, the combination of those things had to make that maneu- ver score be very good or excellent. So a plus 1 or plus 1.5. Lope Terry: A very hard maneuver to do is to lope out of an extended trot. If youre not careful, you confuse your horse. But she went right into it. There was no confusion. No extra movement, and he loped right off without any hesitation. No change of attitude. Thats a high marker. That horse that goes right into it with the least amount of effort from the rider draws the highest degree of difficulty score. When he lopes, he is pleasing to watch with high quality of movement. The departure counts into that lope. And therefore that may be a plus 1.5 because he was very good at taking off into that high degree of difficulty maneuver. Alex: From the extended trot into the lope can be a tricky maneuver. She made the transition with no visible collection, which set the stage for a positive maneuver score. That allowed the horse to continue to have expression and a good topline. Its a high degree of difficulty. The horse exhibits a nice forward lope down the long side of the arena where you can see his quality of movement. The com- bination of these parts earns him a positive maneuver score. Gate Terry: I didnt want them to start too far from the gate. I believe youd ride him right up to it on the ranch. She went right up, took a hold, and opened and shut the gate and didnt let the cattle out. She didnt mess around. Its not a speed event, but when she moves her horse around, she showed me she had her horse under total control and the horse yielded well to the riders leg. no fight going on. I dont want a horse that I fight with. If you hold your arm straight out to show me that your horse can real- ly walk fast, you are not going to get any points, because my arms are going to be wore out when I walk a horse more than 50 foot. Back to the integrity part of a ranch horse – thats not a walk we would use out on the ranch to go some- place because our arms would be tired. So dont make it a circus event. Youre not going to get extra points. Alex: She has a nice walk. Remember the walk is credit earn- ing if its longer, not necessarily faster. The horse can have a more lengthened stride, but it doesnt mean its a faster stride. Some horses have a quicker gait than others and thats OK if you are trying to cover country. But it needs to be natural. It needs to appear that its that horses natural pace. When that horse appears to have an unnatural pace, then I dont think it is a credit-earning maneuver. Trot, Transition to Extended Trot Terry: His trot is a true two-beat gait. It also should be ground covering and not rough. If the rider shows any roughness, I go back to the integrity of my ranch horse; I want him to be ground covering and smooth to ride. Even at the extended trot, his hocks arent behind him and hes smooth. She doesnt look like shes work- ing at all. Thats the only time we let some slack in the reins, because she moves up and moves her hand forward but she never changed her reins. She didnt let it out or take it up. Thats a high degree of difficulty because when you move up to the extension, you can break gait. Thats either a 1-point penalty or 3-point penalty, according to how much you break gait.

Front-Cover

<a
