RANCH HORSE JOURNAL JUNE 2016 35 H protects your knees. Even though the fringe is sliced and diced, it still gives you protection. Joey says many cowboys wear a taller-topped boot with chinks, but the construction of a chink makes mounting and dismounting far easier than with chaps. If youre getting on and off 20 horses a day, the chink is just a little bit easier to get around in, Joey says. Chinks are showing up in the show pen too, particularly in ranch riding, versatility and working cow horse. Jack says riders tend to wear the equipment theyre used to wearing at home, so that has carried over to competition. Style Options CHINKS HAVE A COUPLE OF VARIATIONS TO THE SAME SILHOU- ette. Jack and Joey offer many options to customers to create their ideal equipment. Material: Options include cow, elk and buffalo hide in several thicknesses and finishes. Joey says most chinks he makes are made of cow leather. Chinks are usually made of top grain leather, which is smooth on one side and roughout HORSEMEN HAVE WORN LEATHER LEGGINGS FOR GENERATIONS, dating back to the Spanish Moors. While shotgun chaps are the most popular style, chinks are a variation gaining in popularity. Today, these shorter leggings can be seen at many working ranches, in versatility classes and even in working cow horse in some regions. Our leather experts Jack Gully of Newell, South Dakota, and Joey Jemison of Weatherford, Texas, share their thoughts on the diminutive leg protection. Bit of Background IT IS THOUGHT THAT CHINKS DESCENDED FROM THE SPANISH vaquero leg covering known as armitas, which means little armor. Armitas look very similar to chinks, with the leather encasing the leg from the waist to below the knee, and fringe along the edge and beyond the knee. However, unlike chinks, armitas are made of a softer material, and dont have any hard- ware – with just a flap of soft leather around the waist to secure it in place. It was a simple way of making (leg coverings) without a sewing machine, Joey says. A lot of times the armitas would be step-in, with lacing on the leg. No buckles, no sew- ing, no riveting. The name chinks could be descended from chinkaderos, which originally referred to armitas. Jack and Joey say chinks used to be mainly popular in the Southwest, California and Nevada; where cowboys referred to themselves as buckaroos, but today theyre seen quite often all over the West and in Texas. In the 1970s and 80s, I didnt see many pairs of chinks on cowboys in Texas, Joey says. On the big ranches like the Pitchfork or the Four Sixes, Waggoner or King Ranch – all the cowboys wore shotguns. Joey says hes seen a lot of cutting horse trainers in Weatherford wear chinks at home, and they show in shotgun or batwing chaps. The chink has kind of found a niche here with working cowboys and with horse trainers in general, Joey says. And on those big ranches, Im seeing the younger guys wearing chinks now. Chinks vs. Chaps BOTH CHAPS AND CHINKS PROVIDE PROTECTION FROM BRUSH and the elements, while offering additional grip in the saddle. But chinks have several benefits over shotgun chaps, especially in warmer climates. Chinks are cooler in the summertime and they offer ease of movement, while still giving you protection, Jack says. Our experts say chinks are handy if you need to get down on the ground to work, such as during brandings, working in a feedlot or doctoring calves. He adds that their length is perfect to keep your knees protected during such tasks. You can walk around in chinks and step on your horse much easier, but with longer fringe, if you kneel down for something, you wont get a rock digging into your knee or mud on the knees of your jeans, Jack says. The chink fringe COURTESY JACK GULLY Wooly chinks are a novel look, but they offer great additional warmth, thanks to the long-haired hide.

<a
