<P>44 JUNE 2016 RANCH HORSE JOURNAL a farm or ranch anymore. Its a good education, but its also fun for the kids and the adults. We do some roping on the ground, teach them how to handle a rope, he continues. Even the people who say they dont want to try it usually end up enjoying it. Then we have the kids do some finger-painting on a horse, they can use their hand to ‘brand the horse or whatever they want. Its a really good way to get kids to interact with a horse in a non- threatening way, and most of the kids really love that. They have also hosted international guests from a number of countries in Europe and South America. They are interested in Quarter Horses and having experi- ence visiting a ranch, he says. Thats actually been very good for us and a really nice exchange. An interest in education and sharing the ranching lifestyle has pushed Sunup to donate two foals to the AQHA Ranching Heritage Young Horse Development Program, which pairs a qualified youth member with a weanling bred by a Ranching Heritage Breeder. We did it because we felt pretty strongly that giving a youth an opportunity to work with a young colt and see- ing it through a couple years or more of its life is really important, Vickie says. Having youth work with a young horse is such a tremendous opportunity for them to learn a lot. I think thats a really rich experience. I dont think enough youth get to start with that young horse and progress with them together. I think they often climb up on an older horse, which will teach them something, as well, but I think having that connection and relationship is really important. We thought the young foals would have some great opportunities with these aspiring youth riders and, hopefully, showmen. We thought it was a two- way opportunity for both the youth and colts. A 2013 gelding by Jack Parr Sun went to Zachary Hite of Osceola, Wisconsin. A 2014 foal went to Addison Fjelstad of Scarville, Iowa, who was the reserve world champion in ranch riding at the 2014 Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show aboard Mini Mes Mercedes, and last year was a finalist in working cow horse. She took home the chestnut filly Ima Star Eyed Robin, a daughter of Sunups Starwatch out of another mare whose fourth dam is EZ Dawson. The way the program is set up, they have quite a bit of responsibility, so that is an important part of it too, Greg adds. They have to qualify to be eligible in the first place, make a commitment over some time. I think thats a good part of the program. They have to earn it. Commitment and legacy have been foundational practices at Sunup Ranch since its inception, and even with its many changes continues with the commitment to breeding a good ranch horse today. How AQHA is giving renewed recognition to the ranch horse has been a good thing, Vickie says. I also think it has a broad appeal in the public. AQHA is harkening back to its roots as it moves forward, and I think when people imagine the Quarter Horse, thats one of the pictures that comes into their mind – that versatile ranch-type horse. The ranching heritage has been a very good program as well. Those things have been very encouraging the last few years to us and affirming what weve strived to do as breeders. Andrea Caudill is editor of the Ranch Horse Journal. To comment, write to acaudill@aqha.org. vopasture. We have three pasture setups and we run three different groups of cows, and we weigh the cows before they go in and when they come back out to see if they gain or lose on each pasture. Then the students take samples from each pasture – the forage, water quality, water infiltration into the soil. Its still an ongoing study so we dont have a lot of results yet, but it looks like there are a lot of advantages to managed woodlands for grazing cattle. They sell horses, of course, and sell their grass-fed beef directly to customers. Continuing the ranch tradition of sell- ing horses at private treaty – many sight-unseen – they take pride in the personal connections made with buyers. Greg has used his family resort background to help expand the ranch into agri-tourism. Their location near Brainerd puts them in close range of a number of resorts, and they offer a family friendly opportunity to try the west- ern lifestyle. Sunup offers ranch tours during the peak tourist season, allowing people to see the horses, cattle, foals and calves, as well as wildlife and birds. There is a horse-drawn wagon tour of the scenic ranch, and fun hands-on activities that often include a gentle Quarter Horse. We enjoy showing people (the ranch), but also giving people that connection to the ranch, Greg explains. Because so many have lost that connection, not as many people live on In 2003, Sunup Ranch was honored as an AQHA Legacy Breeder, for 50 continuous years of breeding.
