What challenges lie ahead? BY KEITH BRANNON PHOTOGRAPH BY JENNIFER ZDON If newly appointed dean Dr. Lee Hamm hadnt been in such a rush to ?nish college, he might have become a physicist instead of a physician. Early on he was fascinated by the complexity of science and exploring a problem from all sides to unravel an answer. I went through college in three years by taking heavy course loads, and if I had stayed a fourth year I probably would have gone into physics, Hamm says. I enjoyed the math. Put me in a room to try to solve things—that was what I really loved. That same drive for answers helped Hamm become a nationally recognized nephrologist and accomplished researcher in kidney and cardiovascular diseases in his 37-year career as a doctor. But dont let his quiet demeanor fool you. Hes not just an academic. When the levees broke after Hurricane Katrina, Hamm was one of the key leaders who helped care for and evacuate patients stranded for days in downtown hospitals without power, air conditioning or running water. As chief of internal medicine at the time, he helped make sure all 120 patients at Tulane Hospital and more than 60 ?ood victims were safely airlifted by the National Guard from the hospitals parking garage rooftop. Hamm, who used a boat to check on faculty and residents in other hospitals and tried to get troops to hot-wire a truck to ferry critical patients up the seven-story parking garage, was the last doctor to leave the hospital more than ?ve harrowing days after the storm. Hamms steady leadership in a crisis, stellar record at Tulane and extensive knowledge of the local healthcare market made him a natural ?t as the schools new dean and senior vice president. Lee has an outstanding national reputation as a medical researcher, educator and clinician, says Tulane University President Scott Cowen, lauding his knowledge of Tulane and the landscape of medical education, research and clinical practice. When it comes to outlining his goals for the School of Medicine, Hamm is clear on his ?rst challenge as dean: positioning the schools clinical programs within the regions changing healthcare market. The citys largest healthcare organizations—Ochsner, HCA and the nonpro?t that runs Childrens Hospital—are vying to run two major public hospitals in Jefferson Parish. At the same time, the new University Medical Center and Veteran Affairs hospital are under construction downtown. All have the potential to bring new training opportunities for Tulane students, residents and fellows. Hamm also wants to get back to basics by expanding the schools research base and re-engaging faculty in the schools core missions: quality research, excellent patient care and a top-notch educational experience for students. We sat down with Hamm after his ?rst few weeks on the job to talk about his plans for his ?rst year, changes in medical education and why he thinks the school is poised for a higher national pro?le.</p> <UL><LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/1/1/">Front-Cover</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/2/2/">Inside-Front-Cover</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/3/3/">Page-3</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/4/4/">Page-4</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/5/5/">Page-5</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/6/6/">Page-6</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/7/7/">Page-7</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/8/8/">Page-8</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/9/9/">Page-9</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/10/10/">Page-10</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/11/11/">Page-11</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/12/12/">Page-12</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/13/13/">Page-13</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/14/14/">Page-14</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/15/15/">Page-15</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/16/16/">Page-16</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/17/17/">Page-17</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/18/18/">Page-18</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/19/19/">Page-19</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/20/20/">Page-20</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/21/21/">Page-21</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/22/22/">Page-22</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/23/23/">Page-23</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/24/24/">Page-24</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/25/25/">Page-25</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/26/26/">Page-26</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/27/27/">Page-27</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/28/28/">Page-28</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/29/29/">Page-29</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/30/30/">Page-30</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/31/31/">Page-31</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/32/32/">Back-Cover</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publications/297/x/sitemap.xml" target="_blank">site map</a></LI> </UL>
