<P>2 TULANE | MEDICINE FALL 2013 tulane.edu/som V itamin therapy is a promising avenue to improving symptoms of pain, tingling and numbness in hands and feet typical of diabetic neuropathy, a Tulane study concluded. The six-month study involved 200 type 2 diabetes patients. Some patients were given Metanx, a vitamin-rich prescription medical food developed by PamLab, a Covington, La.-based company, while others received a placebo. Within about two to three months, patients taking Metanx started doing signi?cantly better than those taking the placebo, says study leader Dr. Vivian Fonseca, Tullis-Tulane Alumni Chair in Diabetes and past president of science and medicine for the American Diabetes Association. Neuropathy basically means abnormalities of the nerves, Fonseca says. In diabetes the classic case is peripheral neuropathy, affecting the ends of nerves in the hands and feet. Approximately 50 to 60 percent of diabetes patients experience symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. The condition can worsen if the disease is not managed. The major causes of neuropathy are diabetes; in the past, leprosy; some infections; and vitamin de?ciency, Fonseca says. Several years ago Fonseca came across reports that high doses of vitamins may ease neuropathy symptoms. I also found reports in the literature of Metanx, which contains high doses of B vitamins, helping people with neuropathy, he says. VITAMINS MAY EASE DIABETES SYMPTOMS The claims were not supported by clinical studies, however, so Fonseca suggested a randomized controlled trial at Tulane and ?ve other sites. We analyzed the study data and found that patients had improvement in some parameters tested, and those with subtle vitamin de?ciencies did the best, Fonseca says. That tells me that vitamin de?ciency may have been contributing to a worsening of that patients neuropathy, and we corrected that. After the trial was completed, Fonseca served as a paid consultant to PamLab on the product. He also has done two paid lectures for them. American Diabetes Association Names Award for Fonseca The American Diabetes Association created a new award named for Dr. Fonseca (pro?led in the spring 2013 issue of Tulane Medicine). Fonseca served as the associations 2012 president– medicine and science, and he has been a mentor and role model for many researchers. The recipient of the ?rst Vivian Fonseca Scholar Award is Dr. Vijay Viswanathan, head of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Research, Education and Training in Diabetes in Tamil Nadu, India. MEDICINE NEWS THE ENVELOPE, PLEASE Members of the Class of 2013, along with numerous relatives and friends, packed the Mardi Gras World ballroom in March to learn where they will do their medical residencies. Eagerly anticipated envelopes, each one containing residency assignments from the National Resident Matching Program, were distributed in random order to the students. 188 Tulane medical students participated in Match Day 2013. 30 states are residency destinations for Tulane medical students. MATCH DAY 2013 Vidang Nguyen (left) and Meera Kirpekar celebrate their residency news. Kirpekar matched with an anesthesiology residency at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, while Nguyen will pursue an internal medicine residency at University of Washington School of Medicine Af?liated Hospitals in Seattle. 34.6 of Tulane medical students selected primary care (65 medical students). 23.9 of Tulane medical students will stay in Louisiana (44 medical students).</p> <UL><LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/1/1/">Front-Cover</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/2/2/">Inside-Front-Cover</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/3/3/">Page-3</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/4/4/">Page-4</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/5/5/">Page-5</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/6/6/">Page-6</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/7/7/">Page-7</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/8/8/">Page-8</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/9/9/">Page-9</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/10/10/">Page-10</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/11/11/">Page-11</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/12/12/">Page-12</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/13/13/">Page-13</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/14/14/">Page-14</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/15/15/">Page-15</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/16/16/">Page-16</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/17/17/">Page-17</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/18/18/">Page-18</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/19/19/">Page-19</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/20/20/">Page-20</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/21/21/">Page-21</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/22/22/">Page-22</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/23/23/">Page-23</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/24/24/">Page-24</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/25/25/">Page-25</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/26/26/">Page-26</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/27/27/">Page-27</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/28/28/">Page-28</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/29/29/">Page-29</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/30/30/">Page-30</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/31/31/">Page-31</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/297/wqtaigylu/32/32/">Back-Cover</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publications/297/x/sitemap.xml" target="_blank">site map</a></LI> </UL>
