<P>Q-RACING JOURNAL FEBRUARY 2013 39 T THE BROODMARE SLIGHTY ICY LED THE WAY IN THE 2013 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale, selling for a sale-topping $250,000 during the three-day sale January 17-19 at Heritage Place in Oklahoma City. After two years of record-setting sales, preliminary num- bers showed that 925 horses sold for a gross of $7,711,250, dipping the average 8 percent to $8,336 and the median 6 percent to $4,500. There were 1,177 horses cataloged, including dispersals from Lucas Racing Inc. and Bobby Cox. We had a great crowd on hand for the sale and we are looking forward to an exciting year in 2013, said Spence Kidney, the Heritage Place director of operations. The 2013 Winter Mixed Sale finished strong with over 88 percent of the horses sold and a solid average from start to finish. The 11-year-old Slighty Icy topped the sale, selling on the second day. Consigned by Royal Vista Ranches LLC as agent for Deverne Westons D M Cattle Co. Inc. of Hereford, Texas, the mare sold to Mary Jahnels MJ Ranch of Canadian, Texas. Bred by D M Cattle Co., Slighty Icy is a stakes-placed daughter of Chicks Beduino who won or placed in eight of 15 starts and earned $44,085. She was third in the 2005 Denim N Diamonds Handicap (R) and fourth in the 2005 La Primera Del Ano Derby (G2), and also contested the 2004 Los Alamitos Million Juvenile Invitational (RG3) and Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1). Out of Icy Morn, a Thoroughbred mare by Crowned Jewel, Slighty Icy is a half sister to Grade 1-placed runners First Down Morn (by First Down Dash, $193,829) and Early Morning Bite (Fishers Dash, $115,581). From eight foals, Slighty Icy has produced four winners from five starters, with earnings of $412,970. Leading them is 2010 Rainbow Futurity (G1) winner Hes Too Icy For Me, a gelding by First Down Dash who earned $355,127, and his full brother, the stakes-placed Mighty Icy ($20,562). Slighty Icy was sold in foal to First Down Dash for a full sibling to Hes Too Icy For Me and Mighty Icy. The next-highest seller was the 14-year-old Last Shall Be First, who was consigned by Roger Daly as agent for Childers Ranch LLC of San Francisco. Selling to Luis Alvarez for $225,000, Last Shall Be First is a daughter of Strawfly Special out of the Chicks Beduino mare Outlasting. Bred, raised and raced by American Quarter Horse Hall of Famer Spencer Childers, Last Shall Be First won five of 17 starts, placed or showed in five more and earned $168,302 in her racing career. She won the 2002 Governors Cup Derby (RG1) and Dash For Speed Handicap, and ran second in the Governors Cup Futurity (RG1) and third in the Golden State Derby (G1). From eight starters, she has produced seven winners with earnings topping $1 million. Among them are multiple Grade 1-placed Last To Fire (by Walk Thru Fire, $572,336), stakes winner and Grade 1-placed Last To Check Him (by Check Him Out, $295,534), stakes winner Jazz Be First (by Bono Jazz, $164,843) and stakes- placed Better Check Me Out (by Check Him Out, $12,830). Two 6-year-old mares also topped the six-figure mark. Full Moon Dasher was consigned by Bielau Oaks of Weimar, Texas, and picked up by D&S Racing LLC for $123,000. The mare was sold in foal to world champion Apollitical Jess. The Dash Ta Fame mare is out of the good mare Nagano Moon, a daughter of Major Rime. The winner of four of 15 starts, with four seconds and two thirds, Full Moon Dasher earned $122,086. Her single biggest win came in the 2011 Four Corners Senora Stakes (R). Full Moon Dasher is a half sister to champion First Moonflash (by First To Flash, $969,828), a full sister to multiple stakes winner Dash Ta Moon ($351,680) and a half sister to Grade 1-placed runner Vancouver Moon (by FDD Dynasty, $120,760). The other six-figure seller was the 2007 Panther Mountain mare Cat Five Storm. Consigned by Marty Powers, agent, the mare was purchased by the Terry Bell Estate for $101,000. Cat Five Storm is a daughter of Panther Mountain out of the Send Cash mare She Wants Cash. The mare has made 27 starts, with seven wins, four seconds and five thirds and earnings of $149,985. Her most recent starts were a win in the August 25 Faubourg St. John Stakes at Fair Grounds, where she won by a length, followed by a poor trip and a third-place finish in the October 13 Herman Jefferson Stakes (G3). She is a four-time stakes winner, which in addi- tion to the aforementioned stakes includes the 2011 Marathon Stakes, Red Cell Sam Houston Distance Challenge and Virgil Bond 870 Stakes.
