<P>8 FEBRUARY 2013 Q-RACING JOURNAL T THE EAGLES ARE FLYING. ONE IS THE ALL-TIME LEADING FRESH- man sire, the other, his son, is the tenth freshman to be world champion. So youre hearing a lot about Eagles right now: the daddy, One Famous Eagle (Mr Jess Perry-One Famous Lady by Chicks Beduino), and the kid, One Dashing Eagle (One Famous Eagle-One Sweet Dash by First Down Dash). The elder Eagle took flight from One Famous Lady. Bred by American Quarter Horse Hall of Famers the Allred Bros. (Harvey, Jerry and Dale) of Mesa, Arizona, One Famous Lady raced for Johnny Trotter of Hereford, Texas. One Famous Lady is one of seven winners from 11 starters out of One Slick Cookie, a graded stakes-placed Dash For Cash mare who ran in champion Fabulous Forms Millie Vessels Cap (G1) and was a full sister to Grade 1 futurity winner One Slick One. By Chicks Beduino, One Famous Lady is a half sister to the stakes-winning Separatist mare Focus On Speed and the stakes-placed Strawfly Special mare One Flying Cookie. When we first got One Famous Lady, she was really frac- tious, said Trotter, now the AQHA second vice president. I sent Blane Wood out to Blane Schvaneveldts sale to get a First Down Dash filly and he came back with her. I didnt like her much. She was real thin, real slab-sided, looked like a Greyhound. And she was real fractious – she blew up, slid out under the stall door and peeled the skin off her cannon bone. We got her healed but just barely got her broke. We had to keep a goat in the stall with her just to keep her calmed down. But when Blane finally did get her going, she just wouldnt quit. Earning $172,515 while competing in top-flight company, One Famous Lady started nine of her 13 career races at Ruidoso Downs, where she ran in the 2002 Ruidoso Juvenile Invitational (R), lit the board in champion First To Flashs Rainbow Futurity (G1) and champion Silvered Eyes Rainbow Derby (G1), and finished fifth in Snow Big Deals track- record-setting All American Derby (G1). One Famous Lady scored her two lifetime wins at Sunland Park, where in January 2003 she won the West Texas Maiden Stakes and returned a year later in her final trip to post to decorate her catalog page with black type by running third to Corona Coquette in the KHEY/Y96 Handicap at Sunland Park. Through mid-January, One Famous Lady had produced four winners and the earners of $1,483,348 from nine start- ers, including not only One Famous Eagle but the stakes- placed First Down Dash gelding One Famous Ferragamo. One Famous Lady this season will be represented by three 2-year-olds, the First Down Dash colt Strategic Weapon and the Mr Jess Perry colt Famous Eyecatcher, both of whom are in training with Wood, and the Corona Cartel colt Good Timer Cartel, who sold for $210,000 at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. Even now, One Famous Ladys still not a pet, Trotter said. Shell let you pet her, let you trim her feet and do all that, but she really just likes to be let alone. But thats just her. She was one of those tough, hard-knocking racehorses that just could never get lucky, never got a break. But she never quit. Blane told me she might not ever outrun a big horse, but she would sure make a big horse run. She did. So did her son and grandson, who outran a lot of big horses. Lets hear it for the Eagles, both dashing and famous. Richard Chamberlain is senior writer for AQHA Publications. To comment, write to richc@aqha.org. QUARTER PATHS= One Famous Lady made big horses run. By Richard Chamberlain EAGLEFlight COURTESY JOHNNY TROTTER One Famous Lady In my column about special effort (Deck the Halls, Quarter Paths, December 2012), I wrote that Jodys Glory stood at Dr. Charles Grahams Southwest Stallion Station in Elgin, Texas. Jody Oh – not Jodys Glory – was at Southwest. That was bad enough, but a much more egregious error was in identifying Special Efforts breeders as Marvin and Ellie Moehrig. Special Effort was bred by Allen Moehrig, whose wife was Jeanette. The Moehrigs often partnered with good friends Marvin and Ellie Selig on such horses as Jody O Toole, Dashin Is Easy, Eyesa Special and Mitey Easy Dash. Those were stupid, careless mis- takes, for which I apologize.
