The class ended with a keynote presentation from distinguished entrepreneur Alan Shor, who gave a talk about his company, Retail Connection, the companys investment in Teavana, the IPO experience and the eventual company sale to Starbucks. In November, the Caruth Institute presented the 23rd annual Dallas 100TM Entrepreneur Awards at the Omni Dallas Hotel, recognizing the 100 fastest-growing, privately held companies in the Dallas area. The top winner was OneTechnologies LP, CEO and president Mark Henry. The event included a keynote speech from Jack Matthews, founder and president of Matthews Southwest. In August, ONeil Center Advisory Board Chairman Jerry Fullinwider led a brief meeting, followed by a conversation with Richard Fisher, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. Fisher made remarks on monetary policy and the Texas and U.S. economies and answered questions from board members. In October, Keith Hankins, humane studies fellow at the Arizona Center for the Philosophy of Freedom, discussed his working paper, A Skeptical Look at the Case for Property-Owning Democracy. Drawing on empirical and theoretical research in economics, political science and sociology, he critiqued John Rawls theory for a stringent pre-distribution of capital, known as property-owning democracy. Also in October, Art Carden, assistant professor of economics at Samford University, held an academic seminar. His talk, titled The Bourgeois Era: Why Some Places Are Very Rich While Other Places Are Very Poor, explored how modern prosperity emerged: a combination of economic freedom and a rhetorical environment that valued commerce and innovation.
