<P>22 continued from previous page a class on the evolution of American capitalism. He reminds us that, until 1967, it was legal to publish a gender-speci?c job advertisement. The 20-year-olds today have no idea the country was this way, so we make sure that they do. Additionally, in the last decade, about 25,000 more women worldwide have taken the GMAT, a sign that a previously male-centric business universe has been undergoing a steady gender shift. Personally, Ive never felt different, says Liz Schaab (MBA 14), president of the 49-member graduate Women in Business organization. Sometimes, I even forget. I see everyone as a peer, as an equal. While female students maintain that all career options and aspirations are as possible for them as they are for their male classmates, attention is still paid to their certain and specific needs. At SMU Cox, two Women in Business clubs provide an array of support for both graduate students and undergraduates. I know that many of my colleagues have aspirations of becoming a CEO, or partner, or sitting on a board of directors, but what we also want is to have a family, says Emily Mims (BBA 15), president of the newly formed undergraduate Women in Business club. It is sad that we think these two very different, but very important, aspects of our lives clash — its almost like we have to choose one over the other. The club grew out of the need to encourage and promote women in Cox Executive Education Promotes Womens Leadership Platform The business communitys need for leadership talent requires corporations to cultivate all sources of talent, and women have been expanding their presence in executive ranks. When Mary Barra was named as General Motors CEO, she became the 22nd woman to currently lead a Fortune 500 company, and the first woman to lead a global auto maker. The business case for womens leadership is compelling. According to Harvard Business Review, The standard argument is that diversity is good and you should have both men and women in the group. But, so far, the data show, the more women, the better. For example, McKinsey finds that companies ranking in the top quartile of executive-board diversity (women and foreign nationals) had a 53 percent higher return on equity than those in the bottom quartile (McKinsey Quarterly). The current generation of businesswomen should focus more on enhancing general business, strategic and financial acumen than interpersonal, networking and influencing skills (Diversity Executive). As HBR recently put it, The context must support a womans motivation to lead and also increase the likelihood that others will recognize and encourage her efforts — even when she doesnt look or behave like the current generation of senior executives. I think this shows that there is a great need for an organization that can give women the networks, support and mentors we need in order to have an equal playing field.
