Women as Mentors Creating connections with senior female industry leaders is a critical element of students experiences at SMU Cox. Beyond business school, we have fewer women mentors to look up to and talk with, says Schaab. There is still room to grow, so that a person is not a ‘woman leader, just a good leader. The Womens Inner Circle also emerged from a need for networking opportunities across industries, particularly since women are starting businesses at a faster rate than men, according to the National Association of Women Business Owners. There may be more start-ups, but they often dont grow as large due to lack of mentoring and funding, says Williamson, so young women wanted access to more senior women to help them have more success in entrepreneurship. Corporations, she says, should be open to having more women in key leadership roles, including the CEO position, like recent high-pro?le appointments such as GMs Mary Barra. When the individuals sitting at a table are diverse in gender, ethnicity, education and experiences, customers are better served and transactions are better structured, says Williamson, noting that a dialogue among people with diverse backgrounds is more conducive to solving problems. Research by Catalyst, a nonpro?t organization dedicated to expanding opportunities for women in business, shows that when there are more women in top leadership within a company, the company has a higher return on shareholder equity. Additionally, the experience of motherhood should not be construed as defining, Williamson says. We, as a business community, need to be ?exible to get someone through certain stages. When a woman has children, it doesnt mean that she is less committed to her career. It just means that she has children and may need to work a bit differently. Building a Pipeline What is the solution? Companies must find new solutions to keep their pipeline of women leaders strong, particularly during mid-career, when many may otherwise leave to start families. According to a recent McKinsey report, if companies could raise the number of middle-management women who make it to the next level by 25 percent, it would signi?cantly alter the pipeline. Women who make it to senior manage- ment generally share an aspiration to lead and believe that getting to senior leadership is worth the cost. Thus, mentorship and sponsorship are key, and role models such as Williamson will not only inspire younger women to attain senior and executive-level leadership positions, but also will actively demonstrate that women do not have to make a choice between family and work. Rather, they will learn how to set their own career paths based on their life stages and career aspirations. Further, with government and corporate encouragement, ?exible workplace solutions, internships, and structured promotion systems, women are primed to succeed in record numbers, bringing savvy business acumen into boardrooms, diverse viewpoints and new pragmatic solutions. n I was never left out, or not treated as an equal.
