<P>25 cox.smu.edugo to 25 FEATURE STORY Now, a year and a half later, Morton and Bachman, owner and partner of Dallas- based USGT Investors, LP, have discovered that their pairing has transcended mere career guidance. The two meet regularly and share a give-and-take that bene?ts both. We talk about everything, school, but mainly deals, says Morton, who co-piloted small jets for a charter company as an undergraduate and worked as an aviation consultant for two years before entering SMU Cox. I have a start-up idea, for instance, and I sent a long paragraph for him to tear apart. He told me, ‘Here is what I see a problem with, and now, Ill see if I can ?nd a solution. Well beat the bumps out of it until its right. Stuart is very ambitious, willing to listen and very entrepreneurial, says Bachman, who has consulted with his mentee about an aviation deal his firm is working on. Really, what I get out of it is a chance to hang around with young people with great ambition, intelligence and drive, who want to make things happen and change the world. I call them superstars. I know they will do well; I just dont yet know how. Bobby Lyles Vision The two found each other through the Cox Associate Board Mentorship Program, an initiative created in the late 1970s by then-Board Chairman Dr. Bobby Lyle (67), SMU trustee and member of the Lyle School of Engineering and Cox Executive Boards. The program is currently managed by Kevin Knox, assistant dean of external relations and executive director of the Cox Alumni Association, and remains distinctive among business school mentoring programs because it provides graduate students with out-of- classroom collaboration via mentors whose roles are clearly de?ned. Our mentors are not to use the opportunity to recruit students. Our students are not to use the opportunity to apply for jobs. Our mentors are not expected to give advice on individual courses, says Lyle. We ask our mentors to be good listeners and to offer perspectives based upon their own experiences. We ask them not to tell the students what to do, but to help them frame questions that they can research and answer themselves. We ask them to be sounding boards for ideas. We ask them to be resources to assist the students in being better community leaders, not just better students. And, perhaps most importantly, we place the burden for initiating the student- mentor relationship on the student. MBA students are offered the opportunity during their first year to work with a local business leader selected by Lyle and his team. The school holds a series of networking events where students and mentors can become acquainted. By the W hen Stuart Morton (MBA 14) hit upon Bob Bachmans résumé last fall, he knew that he had found the ideal mentor. He had an MBA, a lot of international M&A experience and his own private equity ?rm, says Morton. I ?gured he could lend good advice. continued on next page</p> <UL><LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/1/1/">Front-Cover</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/2/2/">Inside-Front-Cover</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/3/3/">Page-3</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/4/4/">Page-4</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/5/5/">Page-5</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/6/6/">Page-6</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/7/7/">Page-7</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/8/8/">Page-8</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/9/9/">Page-9</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/10/10/">Page-10</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/11/11/">Page-11</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/12/12/">Page-12</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/13/13/">Page-13</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/14/14/">Page-14</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/15/15/">Page-15</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/16/16/">Page-16</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/17/17/">Page-17</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/18/18/">Page-18</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/19/19/">Page-19</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/20/20/">Page-20</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/21/21/">Page-21</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/22/22/">Page-22</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/23/23/">Page-23</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/24/24/">Page-24</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/25/25/">Page-25</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/26/26/">Page-26</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/27/27/">Page-27</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/28/28/">Page-28</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/29/29/">Page-29</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/30/30/">Page-30</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/31/31/">Page-31</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/32/32/">Page-32</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/33/33/">Page-33</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/34/34/">Page-34</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/35/35/">Page-35</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/36/36/">Page-36</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/37/37/">Page-37</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/38/38/">Page-38</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/39/39/">Page-39</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/40/40/">Page-40</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/41/41/">Page-41</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/42/42/">Page-42</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/43/43/">Page-43</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/562/pveziwlbh/44/44/">Back-Cover</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publications/562/x/sitemap.xml" target="_blank">site map</a></LI> </UL>
