<P>CHATTER Q-RACING JOURNAL MAY 2014 11 2015 American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame Inductees FIVE HORSES AND FOUR MEN WILL JOIN THE AMERICAN QUARTER Horse Hall of Fame in 2015. These distinguished men and horses are part of the history of the American Quarter Horse, and were pleased to welcome them into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame, said Don Treadway Jr., AQHA executive vice president. Their achievements have made them worthy to join the illustrious group already enshrined in the Hall of Fame. The horses are the 1989 mare Corona Chick, the 1959 stallion Coys Bonanza, the 1930 stallion Plaudit, the 1979 stallion Smart Little Lena and the 1962 Thoroughbred stallion Azure Te. The four men are Thomas Bradbury of Byers, Colorado; AQHA Past President Jim Helzer of Arlington, Texas; the late Stanley Johnston of Miller, South Dakota; and the late Ted Wells Jr. of Pawhuska, Oklahoma. The new members of the Hall of Fame will be inducted in March 2015 at the AQHA Convention in Fort Worth, Texas. While they come from different parts of the country, the men all had the common goal of improving the breed and the horses definitely left their legacies. AQHA is honored to rec- ognize their work and lives. The American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum beau- tifully showcases the dozens of horses and people who have earned the distinction of becoming part of the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame. To be a part of the Hall of Fame, horses and people must have been outstanding over a period of years in a variety of categories. Inductees are those who have brought exceptional visibility and/or contribution to the American Quarter Horse. Hall of Fame inductees are chosen each year by a selection committee and honored at the annual AQHA Convention. Sykes was born to O.C. and Kate Sykes on December 3, 1928, in Ballinger, Texas. He attended Ballinger High School and Texas A&M University where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets, graduating in the class of 1950. He married the love of his life, Pat West, in June 1951. He served his country in the United States Army with the 594th Field Artillery Battalion in Germany until early 1953. Following his service, he returned to Texas to raise his children and begin his ranching career with his father and brother. Known as Pa to his children, Sykes was a devout Christian and sought to serve the Lord. His life passions were God, family and friends, ranching and Texas A&M. Sykes loved ranching and was a steward of Gods creation. He thoroughly enjoyed caring for that which was entrusted to him. He was in his element when he was working the land, cattle, horses, sheep, goats, hunting, being with his grandchildren and almost always while telling a good story. He succeeded in instilling in his children and grandchildren the importance of hard work and that God comes first. His answer when facing lifes uncertainties was always to trust the Lord. In addition to serving his family, he dedicated part of his life volunteering for his church, city, school board and fellow cattle- men, horsemen, and sheep and goat raisers. There were few things that he enjoyed more or took more seriously than leading his young mens Sunday school class, as he did for many years at First Baptist Church of Eldorado. Sykes was an AQHA life member and served as an AQHA director from 1980 to 1992, and served terms on both the stud book and registration committee and the racing com- mittee in the 1980s and 90s. He bred horses for 40 years under his own name and that of his Sykes Ranch, and counted among them were five-time stakes winner Talented Lady ($53,436), who among her races won the 1970 Sunland Park Fall Futurity (now G2), as well as stakes winners Milady Lynn and Tiny Dare, and stakes- placed runner Ida Red Raffles. In their later years, God sent Pat and Bob an angel named Rosa Martinez, and the family thanks her for the dedicated love and care she provided to them. Sykes was preceded in death by his wife, Pat; two infant chil- dren; his parents; and his brother, Bill. He is survived by his sons, Robert Sykes and wife, Lisa, and their three sons, Reed, Nathan and Grant; Steve Sykes and wife, Ann, and their three children, Clint and his wife, Lindsay, Clayton and Stevie McBride and her husband, Heston; by two great-grandchildren, Tagan and Brayd, children of Clint and Lindsay Sykes; and by his sister-in-law, Mary Sykes, niece Alison and nephews Ted and Tom. The family sincerely thanks all of the health care providers who assisted in caring for Pa. Sykes was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Ballinger, Texas. Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Eldorado and Hospice of San Angelo.
