<P>=UARTER 12 MAY 2014 Q-RACING JOURNAL Monty Brooks FUNERAL SERVICES WERE HELD February 28 in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church at Blanchard, Oklahoma, for longtime Quarter Horse trainer Monty Brooks. Brooks, 74, of Blanchard, died February 25 in Norman, Oklahoma. The son of Monte Ray Mont and Jennie Mae (Pierson) Brooks was born February 15, 1940, in Blanchard, Oklahoma. He married Myrna Joy Miller on January 2, 1962, in Oklahoma City. Brooks was a true horseman and spent many years breeding and training Quarter Horses until his health began declining. A longtime member of AQHA, Brooks began training in 1975 and conditioned horses that earned more than $3.1 mil- lion. Among the horses he trained was 1984 Worlds Championship Classic (G1) winner Too Tidy Sis. He also trained graded stakes winner Jess Jones, and stakes winners Docs Dusty Okie and Mr Breakthru. Brooks was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Maxine Sullivan; and his two brothers, Bill and Dalton Brooks. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Myrna Brooks, of Blanchard; his daughter, Robin Sullivan and her husband, Shawn, of Blanchard; his two grandchildren, Montana Sullivan and Layla Sullivan; his brother, Jack Brooks and his wife, Wynona, of Nichols Hills; his sister-in-law, Jean Brooks of Oklahoma City; his brother-in-law, Lloyd Sullivan of Round Rock, Texas; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Dash Thru Traffic CHAMPION DASH THRU TRAFFIC, 24, WAS EUTHANIZED MARCH 21. The winner of the 1992 All American Futurity (G1) had suf- fered a breeding accident several years ago and his owners, Charlie and Debbie Therwanger, had pensioned him at Ronnie and Bonnie Stewarts Double S Farm near Holland, Texas, where he lived out his life comfortably. Charlie and Debbie Therwanger loved this horse, Ronnie Stewart said. They spared no expense making sure this horse lived a long and comfortable life. Vessels Stallion Farm bred the horse out of the Beduino (TB) mare Lady Meter Reader in California. The Therwangers purchased Dash Thru Traffic for $32,000 at the Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City and campaigned him in the name of TNT Racing. We had seen him at Vessels (in California) a few months earlier and knew we wanted him, Charlie Therwanger said. He was a big, long-striding horse that didnt hit his best until the All American Futurity. From the second crop of all-time leading sire First Down Dash, the bay stallion won five of seven starts as 2-year-old, including a devastating 1 3/4-length win in the $1.89 million All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs. He was also third in the Rainbow Futurity (G1), fourth in the Kansas Futurity (G1) and a finalist in the Rainbow Derby (G1). The only horse to qualify for all three current Triple Crown races (the Kansas Futurity has since been replaced by the Ruidoso Futurity) his 2-year-old season, Dash Thru Traffic was trained by Jack Brooks, who conditioned him in all but two outs. Making all of his starts at Ruidoso Downs, Dash Thru Traffic ended his career with a 13-6-2-1 record and earnings of $1,056,943. In the stallion barn, Dash Thru Traffic was as equally suc- cessful. From 14 crops, he sired 284 winners (64 percent), 73 stakes horses (17 percent), two champions and the earners of $8.1 million with average earnings per starter of $18,290. Among his leading performers were champion 2-year-old colt Hawkish ($685,631), champion 2-year-old gelding Hes My Dasher ($575,774), Grade 1 winner Sixy Thru Traffic ($209,748), Grade 3 winner Catscape ($203,176), Grade 2 winner Rojo Dancer ($164,266), Grade 2 winner RG Special N Traffic ($159,579), stakes winner and Grade 1-placed Cash Thru Traffic ($140,595), etc. As a broodmare sire, Dash Thru Traffic sired the dams of 20 stakes winners, including Grade 2 winner Sixy Royal King ($230,305), Restricted Grade 1 winner Dashin Gage ($194,971), stakes winner Painted Sable ($170,275), Grade 1 winner Check Cathy ($163,585), etc. Dash Thru Traffic stood his first two years at JEH Stallion Station in Texas and then moved to Vessels Stallion Farm in California. He later returned to Texas before being pensioned at Stewarts Double S Farm in 2008. He loved his job and he always showed his class, Therwanger said. We were truly blessed to have this magnificent horse. Dash Thru Traffic was laid to rest at Double S Farm under a 100-year-old oak tree.
