<P>CHATTER Q-RACING JOURNAL MAY 2014 13 Raise A Secret RACEHORSE AND SIRE RAISE A SECRET, 31, WAS EUTHANIZED ON March 27 due to complications of old age, according to owner Dr. David Moss Northside Large Animal Clinic in West Haven, Utah. Bred by Charles Socolofsky of Scott City, Kansas, Raise A Secret was purchased as a 3-year-old by Dr. Ed Allred. Raise A Secret started 12 races over three years. He won eight, including the Dash For Cash Futurity (G1) and Los Alamitos Futurity (G1), and earned $705,483. He was by LNatural (TB) and out of the Alamitos Bar mare Ala Secret Sue, and is a half brother to stakes winner Duplicate Secret (by Will Win, $108,808). As a sire, Raise A Secret sired 20 crops to race. From them, he got 432 winners from 609 starters (71 percent) and 43 stakes winners (7 percent), and the earners of more than $10.8 million. He stands at No. 40 on the all-time sires by money earned list, and No. 43 on all-time sires by winners. Among his top runners were champion Secret Card ($367,115); Grade 1 winners Kingman Kid ($531,365), Luva Secret ($346,856), Brotherly ($304,508) and Twelvie ($276,950); and six-figure earners Make A Secret ($267,605), Dicey Secret ($203,666), Pride Of Katella ($199,187), Bridlewood ($191,359), Templetonian ($179,823), Girl Secrets ($177,552), Sables Secret ($155,081), Easily A Secret ($140,814), My Son Jeremy ($120,621), Daggers And Darkness ($117,611) and Sneaky Fast ($112,865). The stallion was one of the top broodmare sires in the sport, and currently sits at No. 13 on the all-time broodmare sire list by money earned. Among the runners to his credit is All American Futurity (G1) winner No Secrets Here ($1,637,095), who is out of his daughter Dicey Secret. Raise A Secret was pensioned from stud duty in 2007. Dr. Barry Thompson DR. BARRY B. THOMPSON, 77, DIED March 1 at his home near the town of West, Texas. Thompson bred and raced AQHA Supreme Racehorse Leading Spirit, a three-time Grade 1-winning earn- er of $811,413 who was the cham- pion 2-year-old gelding in 2005. By world champion Special Leader, Leading Spirit was out of Sandras Task, a Special Task mare who was foaled in 1994 and was the first American Quarter Horse bred by Thompson. In 1998, Sandras Task produced Leading Spirits full sister Leading Diva, an earner of $138,174 who in 2000 scored in the Manor Downs Lassie Futurity (G3) to become the first stakes winner bred by Thompson. Since 1994, Thompson has been represented as breeder of 38 winners from 67 starters, including the stakes-winning Panther Mountain mare Panther Purr ($163,146). Known as Dr. T, Thompson was the president of Tarleton State University in 1982-1990 and West Texas A&M University in 1990-94. He then was chancellor of the Texas A&M System in 1994-99, and upon his retirement as chancellor became chancellor emeritus of the A&M System. In 2001, Thompson became president emeritus at Tarleton State. Before taking over the Texas A&M System, Thompson led two schools that are part of the system. Thompson served as president of West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas, just south of Amarillo. He took over in 1990 after the West Texas State University regents voted to join the Texas A&M System instead of the University of Texas. One of his first actions was to cancel the West Texas football program, which returned the following year on a non-scholarship basis. During his tenure, the University increased education requirements and changed its name to West Texas A&M. Prior to returning home to the Panhandle, Thompson was the president of Tarleton State University, which is also part of the Texas A&M System. Thompsons eight years at the helm of Tarleton have been called one of the most expansive eras in Tarleton history. He helped acquire more than $4 million in funding for the school, which was often overlooked by the A&M system and the legislature. Thompson also increased enrollment to more than 6,000. In an effort to recruit more minorities, he personally visited schools beyond Tarletons immediate vicinity, asked African-American churches in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex to establish scholarships for minorities and established the Office of Minority Affairs. Thompson is survived by his wife, Sandra Sue, his child- hood sweetheart to whom he had been married for 58 years. He also is survived by their son Scott; son Bart and his wife, Marie, and their three daughters; and their twin daughters, Karol Wallace and her two daughters, and Kim Simbel and her husband Robert and their daughter and son. Memorial funds may be contributed in care of the Barry and Sandra Thompson Scholarship Fund at Tarleton State.
