<P>Q-RACING JOURNAL MAY 2014 25 complement each other, they both have big hearts, and they like the chariots – thats a big plus for us. Plus or not, they also had problems at World. Though no team ever outran them in five races, the team was disqualified for interference on Friday, when one of the horses took a bad step and lugged in to the next lane, knocking them out of the layoff and forcing them to race on Saturday to qualify for the trophy dash. We had to do it the hard way, Thomas said on Sunday morning. It dropped us back into the loser bracket. Jeff drew the green gate (on the rail) yesterday, blew out there on top by 2 or 3 lengths, took ahold of them and was able to save a lot of horse. Jeff did us a nice job of saving our team, so hopefully we can repeat that today. They needed every bit of it. Though folks on the backside looked at Flying T et al as the heavy favorite, they were in against two very tough teams. Pulling the JRW chariot was Kingly Walk, a 7-year-old sorrel gelding by Walk Thru Fire out of Queen Of Secrets by Raise A Secret. A winner of six of 16 races who earned $31,422 on the flat, Kingly Walk was claimed at Los Alamitos for $12,500 in May 2011. We saw him running at Pocatello in the Maiden Derby in 2010, which he won by about a length, said JRWs Steve Wright. And I chased him ever since. Kingly Walk is teamed with Shake De Bank, a 6-year-old gelding by Royal Shake Em out of VVR Floyds Lil Angel by Floyd De Great. The flat-track winner who earned $16,646 and ran in the Bitterroot Futurity (RG2) was claimed for $6,250 at Arapahoe Park because the guy who trains horses for me on the flat track, Monty Arossa, said go get him for the chariots, said Wright, who shares ownership with JRWs $17,820 Zoetis Les Bois Starter Allowance Challenge at Les Bois Park in Boise, Idaho. Ocean Runner absolutely loves the chariots, he just takes to it, said Sandberg, who lives in West Haven, Utah. I claimed him last sum- mer at Boise for $5,000. The people who owned him dropped him into a claiming race to try to get him claiming-eligible for the Challenge, so I claimed him, ran him back in the Challenge and we won it at Boise. But thats not really why I wanted him: I claimed him mainly for a chariot horse. I love the sport. He had already won one world championship, he was only 5 years old, and I love grays, as well, and love his pedigree. So yeah, that was the main reason: Hes a superstar chariot horse. And when he was eligible for the Claiming Challenge, as well, that was just icing on the cake – he ended up paying for himself in that one race and doesnt owe me a thing. Ocean Runners stablemate Spur N Dirty is a 4-year-old gelding by Feature Mr Jess out of the stakes-winning Dash To Chivato mare Chivatos Secret ($34,796), a half-sister to the graded stakes-winning Maknmoves gelding Hoist Mission ($206,185). Bred by Richard Frandsen and Dennis Parker of Roy, Utah, Spur N Dirty won one of four races on the flat, where he earned $469, and in 2013 qualified to the third division at World. When we first hooked Ocean Runner and Spur N Dirty together, they really did pretty well, for a first time, said Thomas of St. George, Utah. Theyve got a little bit different running style. Jeffs horse really bombs away from the gate, my horse is a little bigger and runs a little more salty on the other end. But you cant get two horses to hook up and run as well as these two did that first time. The very first time we hooked them, they had the fastest time of the day and outran the competition for fun. We won by almost a length under wraps. They just stretched out and ran. Family Tradition THE BEEHIVE STATE SEASON BEGAN AT THE END of December, and the team that ended up as the club winners and then world champions had to work through their share of problems. The combined team of Flying T and Cajun Racing went undefeated through six races in the regu- lar season, but right after the regular season and just before the Utah state championships, Bob Dahles Cajun Racing Stables horse got sidelined. Bobbys horse got hurt late in the season, cracked a quarter just before the state finals, and Jeff (Sandberg) was gracious enough to jump in with us, said Thomas, whose daughter Sierra Dawn Thomas is a WPRA competitor running barrels on the PRCA Wilderness Circuit. We hooked together start- ing about Utah state time, so these horses really didnt run together until state. We hooked them at that point and just went on with it, and theyve been a very, very nice team. They Jeff Sandberg drove Flying T, Cajun Racing & Sandbergs Ocean Runner and Spur N Dirty to the 50th chariot world championship.
