<P>Q-RACING JOURNAL MAY 2014 31 woman to ride the winner of a race with a seven-figure purse in the United States – the only other in North America to that point in time was Julie Krone, who in 1995 won the Molson Export Million at Woodbine in Toronto, which had a purse of one million Canadian. Its not like riding at Pimlico will be an entirely new expe- rience. Before hanging up her flat tack, Purcell-Burkland also rode quite a few Thoroughbreds. There actually was a time period in there where I was rid- ing both full-time, she said. I won the Jean Lafitte Futurity at Delta Downs on Tempered Halo. And its not like she has hung up tack altogether, either. I train barrel horses, said Purcell-Burkland, a member of the Womens Professional Rodeo Association. I was training quite a bit, until I got married, and now I still train barrel horses but mostly my own. I havent had the quality of horse I need to compete in WPRA – Ive been selling my good horses to girls that go on and do well in the WPRA. (laughs) But I am not really trying to go down the road anymore. Im staying close to home so I can do the things that Im doing now. Those things also include rehabilitating horses. And their riders. Ive taken some horses that have had injuries, just a few here and there, and got them back going again, she said. I also take horses that are having trouble, that might be refus- ing or people are having problems with, and I work with them and get them back to where theyre enjoying their lives and doing their jobs. I try to get their minds right. And that means getting their peoples minds right, too. Once I get the horse to where I want him, then I have to bring in the owner or the rider and bring the two together. Thats not necessarily easy. Working with horses is one thing. The more difficult aspect, she said, often is the people. Be that as it may, Purcell-Burkland now spends much more of her time at home near Dripping Springs, Texas, on the ranch that her grandparents had when she was growing up and that is adjacent to the ranch owned by her parents. So my family is just right there, all of us, she said. I have grandkids now, too, so were getting them riding. Its a big family. On May 1, 2010, she married Wayne Burkland, who now is 56 and owns Ellis & Salazar Garage & Body Shops in Austin, Texas. Burkland has two daughters: Kristen, 28, who has daughters Morgan, 3, and Sidney, 9 months; and Courtney, 23, a student at St. Edwards University in Austin. Kristen and Courtney both work for the Burklands company. But that is only a small part of her family. Ive got probably – lessee, let me try to count them – about 250 kids, said Purcell-Burkland, who makes a hand at the Lone Star Rodeo Bible Camp every June in Montgomery, Texas. A lot of the kids who come to the Rodeo Bible Camp have been through some terrible homes and lives. Randy Weaver, who was my pastor when I was on the racetrack, put this together years ago. We have different instructors come – like (Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame member) Tee Woolman for roping – and we work with the kids, through horses, through rodeo events, through church services and through prayer. Ive watched kids come in not wanting to be there and then leave, go on to college and now are succeeding and doing well. Ive watched them grow. Ive watched barrel racing kids who Ive been coaching since they were little and seen them grow up. Once they come to our camp or my clinic or my house, they are mine. So all of that takes up her time. Whew, yeah, Purcell-Burkland said, taking a break between loading horses for her next clinic. As of right now, I havent been called to ride any other races. Ive had a lot of calls from people thinking I was going back to riding, but Im doing this for my friends all over the country, people I rode for in honor of their friends and families. All of this, she said, is for a simple reason. I want to help those in the horse business who maybe havent been as fortunate or blessed as I have, Purcell-Burkland said. I want to give back, I want to love, I want to pass on the blessings that the good Lord gave me. He didnt give me these things for me to just walk away. He put me here, I believe, for a reason. These people didnt walk through my past for no reason at all. Its those people who made me what I am. I put my God first and then my family – my kids, my brothers and sisters, my mom and dad, she concluded. A lot of people have asked me why did I not have children. I wanted to, but this is the family God gave me and Hes always known whats best. So Im good to go. Richard Chamberlain is senior writer for AQHA Publications. To comment, write to richc@aqha.org.
