<P>14 AANnews • September 2014 Power Your Practice with Shared Decision-making Tools To help neurologists and their patients evaluate various treatment options, the AAN has been developing Shared Decision-making (SDM) tools. These tools are based on current guidelines and evidence-based medicine, but present information in an unbiased way, allowing patients to make an informed choice. Five tools have been released by the AAN, and five are planned for development and release throughout the fall and winter. Shared Decision-making tools are important because they engage providers and patients in a collaborative process to determine the best health care decision honoring patient preference and values, said Anup Patel, MD. Patients often make health care decisions without fully understanding all available options. Using an SDM tool supports patients choice while providing them with unbiased information to make an informed decision. There is also research supporting that SDM improves care and reduces costs. SDM tools have been around for decades, but are gaining momentum with recent changes in federal legislation, such as Section 3506 of the Affordable Care Act and a few state legislative requirements. I have used the AAN SDM ‘Initiation of Treatment for Parkinsons Disease to help discuss medication initiation to PD patients, said Anna DePold Hohler, MD, FAAN, co-chair of the AAN Quality and Safety Subcommittee. It is a useful and understandable tool that can be reviewed in the office and given to the patient to take home. The patient can use the handout as a reminder of the current treatment strategy, and can look at other medication options available for future treatment. Readers now can download the FREE iPad app and the mobile-optimized version for smartphones to access published articles without subscription, along with visiting the journals website at Neurology.org/nn. In his editorial Gathering Thunder, Editor-in-Chief Richard M. Ransohoff, MD, states that the purpose of the new publication is not to necessarily fill a void. Rather, our intention is to provide a single source of vital information for a growing community of translational physicians and scientists who sense a unique moment in the development of the field of inquiry at which neurobiology and immunology intersect. The mission of Neurology: Neuroimmunology & Neuroinflammation is to provide neurologists and translationally minded scientists with peer-reviewed articles, editorials, and reviews to enhance patient care, education, and clinical and translational research. Our vision is to be the premier peer-reviewed journal for experts in the fields of neuroimmunology and neuroinflammation. We publish open access reports of original research and in-depth reviews of topics in neuroimmunology and neuroinflammation affecting a broad range of neurologic diseases including (but not limited to): Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, tauopathy, and stroke; multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica; inflammatory neuromuscular disorders; reports focused on nervous system infection; paraneoplastic syndromes, noninfectious encephalitides, and other antibody-mediated disorders; and psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. Clinical trials, instructive case reports, and small case series will also be featured. • Practice Anna DePold Hohler, MD, FAAN Richard M.
