<P>Mandelas Foresight: Using Rugby to Break Cultural Barriers By Murrey Sterley, South Africa Sport, as a subculture within a country or a community can provide an arena for social change. It has the propensity towards creating social cohesion, especially when it is a national team engaged against the world. In South Africa, the 1995 Rugby World Cup was a moment in which sport brought together a country once chained to racial division. It was a time in which only a year earlier all South Africans became eligible to vote in the countrys first full democratic election. The country had narrowly avoided a civil war and a political, economic and social re-building phase was in its infancy. Black people were allowed outside of their homelands and the passes which enslaved them were discarded. Pain was still fresh and wounds had barely begun healing. At that time the journey seemed an uphill battle which could easily be lost. Lost, if it not were for one man, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. President Mandela was a luminary, he looked outside of the traditional thinking of the era to find solutions for current challenges. He preached love, acceptance and tolerance in a country that was taught hatred, racism and violence for many years. Rugby was the sport of the oppressor, a symbol of the strength of white minority rule. Surely it should be ignored and the World Cup should be hosted in another land? This would give the country time and space to deal with the ‘real issues of racism, poverty and the heinous crimes of apartheid. Instead the opportunity was seized, it became a time to show the world our goodness and hospitality; a time to unify the nation, under a sport almost reserved solely for a white skin. President Mandela understood the complexity of the South African past, he had lived it for his whole life, he knew it needed miraculous mo- ments in which all people from all race groups could believe. White people, living in their protected suburbs, living largely under apartheid propaganda, did not always know the full evils of apartheid and for some white people, the realising of the wrong of Apartheid came in the humbling moment when President Mandela wore the Springbok rugby jersey and lifted the Rugby World Cup in victory. I believe most people did not necessarily understand the importance of that moment. In truth it was only a moment and much hard work needed to be done; but the moment was a glimpse into the possible future, a future of unity, a future of a successful integration and a future of chains broken. Sport does not hold all solutions for all prob- lems, but it provides that glimpse of hope, the possibility of change. South Africa needed hope and still needs hope; it was and is the inspiration from that day in 1995 and many other days since then that have provided the needed strength to continue to work towards a successfully integrated country.
