<P>Road Biking in Italy A Muse On Two Wheels By Valentina Primo Last week, as I was guiding a tourist along the steps of Saint Peters dome in Rome, an Ameri- can cyclist surprised me with his quirky anec- dotes. He had come all the way to Italy for a tour across the Tuscan pathways on his brand new bike. But heres the thing -- it was a tailor-made bike he had come to get. As most things in the kingdom of style, passion leads to an unmatchable art: Italys obsession for road bike racing throughout the 20th cen- tury resulted in a flourishing market of hun- dreds of small, artisan bicycle makers all over the country. Today, road bikers from all over the world fly to il bel paese to have their own customized bike crafted --and tour across its sun-drenched trails. The most famous crafthouses are Bianchi, Colnago and more recently Pinarello, but the real jewels come from small anonymous frame builders hidden within the villages and towns of North Italy. Take the case of Sartoria Cicli. Run by two talented crafters from Milan, they design bikes with the perfectionist method of a tailored suit, taking measures of leg length, height and weight, and even the distance from shoulder to wrist. Bike supports are made of cast-iron bases of the legendary old Singer sewing machine, and frames are handmade one by one. From the second you order to the moment you take your own serial numbered bike home, it takes 3 months. But what would the artisans be with- out their passionate muses? In fact, some of cyclings most legendary riders come from the peninsulas shores. Even Maurice Garin, the first winner of the Tour de France, was born in Italy and international cycling races still make Italy a one-of-a-kind spot for cycling experts. The Giro dItalia, also known as the pink race, is a trademark national event followed by thou- sands of enthusiasts worldwide. A 23 day race on different routes passing through the moun- tains of the Alps, the Italian Giro is one of the worlds 3 most prestigious three-week-long Grand Tours. The Tirreno Adriatico, also known as the Due Mari (two seas) is a race in stages of on the road which touches three regions: Tuscany, Umbria and the Marche. Its cycling routes, in seven stages, always go through the major Italian cities. A historical tour with over 40 years of history, the Nove Colli (nine hills) is the most important among the Gran Fondo cycling events in the Adriatic coast, usually taking place in May, followed by the charming Milan-Sanremo tour in June, through the beauty of the Ligurian coasts. Italy is home to a host of Europes most won- derful cultural sites and breathtaking scenery. You can see it by many modes of transport, but road biking will give you memories and experi- ences of Italy that will stay with you forever!
