<P>Hungarian Wedding CustomsBy Szénia Kósa, Hungary. It might sound a little strange, but in the Hungarian language the expression of getting married literally means getting a house, and the phrase married couple would be translated as some- thing like house partners. The guests contribute to the new life of the couple to a great extent. They not only bring useful presents for the new marital home, but grant money using many creative reasons afterwards. The chef comes out with a burnt arm, shout- ing at everyone and motivates the guests with a big wooden spoon to be generous. At midnight, the bride changes from her beau- tiful wedding dress into a traditional and com- fortable red outfit. She dances with the guests, who are waiting in a queue and ready to pay for the short dance. Finally, the groom dances with the bride and suddenly the music stops. He kidnaps his wife and takes her and the money out of the room. When they come back, it turns out that the collected money is not enough, so the guests start throwing or kicking small amounts of money onto the floor to be swept up by the bride. When the couple have completed all the tradi- tions, they spend the rest of the night dancing, talking, laughing, drinking and eating, often until the morning. The guests gradually say goodbye to them, and the couple starts their honeymoon. How do Hungarians celebrate and enjoy get- ting married? Let us start at the beginning… The engagement ideally happens around one year in advance so the couple and their families have enough time to find and book the venues, choose a glamorous white dress for the bride and a suit for the groom, and organise all the tiny details of the big day perfectly. The wedding ceremony consists of two parts; after the civil marriage at a govern- mental office, the couple announces their marriage vows in church in front of God. The celebrations start soon after. Musicians are invited, and the guests (family, relatives and friends) enjoy the 2-3 hour long dinner menu with various dishes. Between each dish the bridesman (traditionally a male friend of the bride) tells funny stories about the food and connects it somehow to the health of the couple or the number of children they will have. During the serving of the dishess, when the guests get bored they start knocking onthe table with their cutlery. Anyone, at any time, can start knocking, and the hundred or more guests follow loudly until the couple finally kiss each other. They might repeat this sever- al times.</p> <UL><LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/1/1/">Front-Cover</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/2/2/">Inside-Front-Cover</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/3/3/">Page-3</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/4/4/">Page-4</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/5/5/">Page-5</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/6/6/">Page-6</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/7/7/">Page-7</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/8/8/">Page-8</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/9/9/">Page-9</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/10/10/">Page-10</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/11/11/">Page-11</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/12/12/">Page-12</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/13/13/">Page-13</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/14/14/">Page-14</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/15/15/">Page-15</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/16/16/">Page-16</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/17/17/">Page-17</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/18/18/">Page-18</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/19/19/">Page-19</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/20/20/">Page-20</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/21/21/">Page-21</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/22/22/">Page-22</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/23/23/">Page-23</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/24/24/">Page-24</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/25/25/">Page-25</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/26/26/">Page-26</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/27/27/">Page-27</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/28/28/">Page-28</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/29/29/">Page-29</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/30/30/">Page-30</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/31/31/">Page-31</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/32/32/">Page-32</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/33/33/">Page-33</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/34/34/">Page-34</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/35/35/">Page-35</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/36/36/">Page-36</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/37/37/">Page-37</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/38/38/">Page-38</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/39/39/">Page-39</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/40/40/">Page-40</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/41/41/">Page-41</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/42/42/">Page-42</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/43/43/">Page-43</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/44/44/">Back-Cover</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publications/879/x/sitemap.xml" target="_blank">site map</a></LI> </UL>
