<P>Marriage in SriLanka By Chapa Perera, SriLanka. Sri Lanka has a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society, rich with diversity. Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians co-exist and, hence, Sri Lankan culture is a rich mixture of all these traditions. This article, however, will only focus on the Sinhala Buddhist wedding celebrations, as details of these are not widely known out- side Sri Lanka. Marriages are made in heaven, or so they say, and Sri Lankan marriages are most definitely so. Sri Lankan culture leans heavily towards astrology, and one cannot forget the signifi- cant role played by stars and planets in forming a union. Sri Lankan weddings are grand events, for they symbolise not only the union of two individu- als, but a joining of two families. A wedding is laden with customs and traditions, with careful attention to auspicious times. An astrologer, upon analysing the horoscopes of the bride and groom, recommends the times for all tradi- tions pertaining to the wedding, and it is believed that adherence to these times ensures a successful married life. The wedding decorations focus heavily on purity and prosperity. A Poruwa (a raised struc- ture) is erected, upon which all the marriage customs take place. This raised structure sym- bolises the elevated position the union of mar- riage receives in the Sri Lankan culture. Other pieces of adornment include rice, coconut, betel leaves, flowers, etc. The bride dresses in white (or other light colours) to symbolise purity. She is adorned with jewellery to sym- bolise prosperity, and the groom himself gifts her with some jewellery atop the Poruwa; this is a symbol of his vow to provide his wife with all her necessities. The most important event of the ceremony is the tying of the nuptial knot. An uncle of the bride joins the right thumbs of the couple with a white thread, and pours water from a special jug onto these enjoined fingers, while chanting traditional mantras to bless the couple. This signifies the ultimate purified union of two individuals, and that this union is witnessed by the three elements of the universe: water, earth and fire. These wedding celebrations express certain core values of the Sri Lankan culture, loved and treasured through generations. Respect for the parents and elders, and adherence to religious rituals, are seen throughout the festivities. The weddings also convey a sense of togetherness, when friends and family come together to cele- brate the joining of two individuals. </p> <UL><LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/1/1/">Front-Cover</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/2/2/">Inside-Front-Cover</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/3/3/">Page-3</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/4/4/">Page-4</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/5/5/">Page-5</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/6/6/">Page-6</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/7/7/">Page-7</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/8/8/">Page-8</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/9/9/">Page-9</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/10/10/">Page-10</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/11/11/">Page-11</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/12/12/">Page-12</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/13/13/">Page-13</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/14/14/">Page-14</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/15/15/">Page-15</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/16/16/">Page-16</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/17/17/">Page-17</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/18/18/">Page-18</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/19/19/">Page-19</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/20/20/">Page-20</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/21/21/">Page-21</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/22/22/">Page-22</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/23/23/">Page-23</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/24/24/">Page-24</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/25/25/">Page-25</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/26/26/">Page-26</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/27/27/">Page-27</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/28/28/">Page-28</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/29/29/">Page-29</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/30/30/">Page-30</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/31/31/">Page-31</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/32/32/">Page-32</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/33/33/">Page-33</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/34/34/">Page-34</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/35/35/">Page-35</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/36/36/">Page-36</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/37/37/">Page-37</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/38/38/">Page-38</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/39/39/">Page-39</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/40/40/">Page-40</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/41/41/">Page-41</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/42/42/">Page-42</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/43/43/">Page-43</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publication/879/ednqpzlod/44/44/">Back-Cover</a></LI> <LI><a href="http://www.mzines.net/publications/879/x/sitemap.xml" target="_blank">site map</a></LI> </UL>
